Position summary

This team member will be responsible for CAD modeling and documentation of medical devices and manufacturing equipment, design and development of assemblies, engineering drawings and prototypes. Change review and implementation of product and machine designs.

Essential Job Functions                                                     

  • Model product concepts using current tool, analysis techniques, and technologies through use of parametric CAD software and other mechanisms.
  • Perform Mechanical design/redesign of medical device products applying industry standards (e.g. ASME Y14.5M-1994) to detail drawings.
  • Demonstrates standard product development process and business processes/systems knowledge through delivery of high-quality deliverables
  • Collaborates within and across functional departments/teams/divisions
  • Works independently to identify activities, prepare execution plans, and exceed goals/objectives
  • Leads medical product research, requirements development, design development, engineering analysis, animal studies, preclinical studies, clinical studies, and creation of medical device documentation
  • Example types of engineering analysis include force/stress/strain/thermal analysis, tolerance analysis, materials analysis, process capability analysis, statistical analysis, and industry standards analysis
  • Example types of medical device documentation include engineering product specifications, component specifications, 3D part/assembly models, 2D design detail drawings, engineering characterization reports, assembly procedures, flowcharts, test plans, and test reports
  • Creates risk management documentation such as design failure modes and effects analysis (DFMEA)
  • Familiar with statistical quality processes such as gage repeatability and reproducibility (GR&R) and capability studies
  • Invents new design concepts and submits invention disclosures
  • Prepares for and conducts engineering design reviews
  • Designs, procures, and fabricates tools/jigs/fixtures
  • Designs engineering experiments and coordinates execution of design verification activities
  • Performs efficient/effective troubleshooting and failure analysis
  • Collects data, analyzes, summarizes, draws conclusions from test results, makes recommendations, and makes informed data-driven decisions
  • Improves specifications, test methods, designs, materials, and/or processes
  • May train and/or provide work direction to engineering support personnel, interns, co-ops, consultants, etc.
  • Create/modify/maintain documentation using CAD tools that are tied to a data management system
  • Provide support for OEM device documentation and Bill of Material structure support
  • Provide support for OEM device documentation
  • Completes document packages by detailing parts and creating BOM and schematics following layouts, sketches and verbal instructions to ensure that all of the needed documentation is available for manufacturing process
  • Reviews and verifies design work of peers to check for compliance with standards and corporate procedures
  • May generate engineering change orders (ECOs) (DCO)
  • Perform FMEA to reduce or eliminate risks, and to design for reliability and manufacturability
  • Develops new potential customers and builds and maintains a positive working relationship with existing customers
  • Understands tooling and manufacturing processes that relate to the industry.  Determines capability and suitability of potential upcoming projects.  Assist in quoting of tooling and production projects
  • Maintains CAD software and hardware.  Maintains materials, records, and resources in a documented system to enable others to use these materials, records, and resources.  Maintains print and document control systems.  Develops and updates existing design formulas and results data
  • Monitors the utilization of employee safety and OE programs
  • Partners with the other business segments: sales/marketing, customer service, engineering, quality, and finance
  • Understands customer needs and the core business markets we serve
  • Ensures business systems are implemented, maintained, and functioning properly
  • Participates in required company meetings
  • Maintains an organized work area (5S)
  • Participates in the Operational Excellence Program
  • Supports and complies with the company's Quality System, ISO, and medical device requirements
  • Completes all other work duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements, Education & Experience (incl. KSA's and certifications)

  • 3-8 years of experience in a designer role
  • Training in Blueprint reading, GD&T, SPC and precision measurement
  • Proficient in 3D Computer-Aided Design (CAD), preferably SolidWorks or similar CAD software
  • Experience working independently under pressure with multiple deadlines
  • A demonstrated ability to effectively make decisions; set clear measurable and aggressive objectives for projects and programs; break complex problems into manageable tasks; and define end dates and meet deadlines
  • Has developed advanced verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and team building skills to create effective working relationships with suppliers, customers and co-workers.
  • Ability to consistently achieve short- and long-term business results
  • Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple tasks when needed
  • Ability to follow through on commitments and holds team members accountable
  • Possess a strong problem-solving skill
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office (Word/Excel/PowerPoint) and ERP and other business-related systems

Desirable Criteria & Qualifications

  • Design simulation (FEA, Moldex3d, etc..) experience
  • Injection molding part design and tooling experience
  • Details-oriented person, proactive, innovative, with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
